Maha Mrityunjaya Havan during Purnima
During Purnima in 2013, like every year, Maha Mrityunjaya Havan is performed. Like already mentioned, Purnima (Full Moon) holds great significance for all Hindus. Maha Mrityunjaya havan is performed on Purnima as it is considered very fruitful. By taking an early bath all the devotees cleanse their body and mind. A sweet dish is prepared with rice, black sesame seeds, vegetables, butter and chopped grass. Then, a Havan Kund is prepared for the Holy fire. On a particular area a layer of sand is spread, over which a wooden structure is built and is covered with ghee. After taking three sips of Ganga jal, the Holy fire is lit. Lord Vishnu and all other God are invoked to be part of the great event. Maha Mriyunjaya mantra is chanted to please Lord Shiva. After the completion of the Havan all the Gods are requested to go back to their Abode. Without this the Havan is incomplete. Purnima (Full Moon) is considered to be very auspicious to conduct religious activities. Devotees fast on Purnima from sunrise to sunset and pray to Lord Vishnu.
The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra:
Om trayam bakkam, yajaa-mahe Sugan-dhim pushti-vardhanam,
Urvaa-rooka-miva bandha-naam, Mrityor mooksheeya maamritaat.
