Navratri is a Hindu festival, which is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Durga. The word Navaratri is derived from Sanskrit. Literal meaning of Navratri is 'nine nights', as 'Nava' stands for nine and 'Ratri' stands for night. Though Navaratri is celebrated all across the globe, but being a Hindu festival it has major importance in India, especially at certain places like Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. In Northern India as well, Navratri is celebrated with great zeal and gusto, especially in the regions of Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh.
Festival of Navratri comes five times in a year, as follows:
- Vasant Navratri
- Gupt Navratri
- Sharad Navratri
- Paush Navratri
- Magh Navratri
Vasant Navratri 2013, also known as Basant Navratri is going to be celebrated from 11th of April to 20th of April. Basant Navaratri is celebrated in the spring season that is in between the months of March to April. At some places, people also know it as Chaitra Navaratri.
Gupt Navratri 2013, also known as Ashadha Navaratri, Gayantri Navratri and Shakambhari Navaratri is going to be celebrated from 9th of July to 17th of July. Gupta Navaratri is celebrated in the Hindu month of Ashadh that comes in the time between June to July. Festival of Gupta Navratri is celebrated in the waxing phase of Moon in month Ashadha.
Sharad Navratri 2013 is going to be celebrated from 5th of October to 13th of October. Sharada Navratri is the most important festival of all Navratri in a year. Amongst all five, Sharada Navratri is celebrated everytime and everywhere. That is why it is also known as Maha Navratri (The Great Navaratri). Sharada Navaratri is celebrated on the first day of dark fortnight of the Hindu month Ashwin. Month of Ashvin falls in between the months of September to October that is at the beginning of winter.
Paush Navratri 2013 is going to be celebrated from 19th of January to 27th of January. Festival of Paush Navaratri is celebrated in the Hindu month of Paush that is in between the time of December to January. Paush Navaratri is celebrated during the waxing phase of Moon of the Hindu month Paush.
Magh Navratri 2013 is going to be celebrated from 11th of February to 19th of February. Magha Navaratri is another part of Gupta Navaratri. It is celebrated in the time of waxing phase of Moon of the Hindu month Maagh that is the time between January to February.
The celebration of this festival is same for all five times and the main logic behind this festival is to commemorate Goddess Durga. She is also known as 'Shakti' The Great Power. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Goddess Durga visits Earth and her people during the time of Navratri.

- First day of Navratri - Devi Shailputri
- Second day of Navratri - Brahmcharini
- Third day of Navratri - Chandraghanta
- Fourth day of Navratri - Kushmanda
- Fifth day of Navratri - Skand Mata
- Sixth day of Navratri - Katyayani
- Seventh day of Navratri - Kalratri
- Eighth day of Navratri - Maha Gauri
- Ninth day of Navratri - Siddhidatri
