About Kali Puja
First of all, AstroSage wishes all its readers a very Happy Kali Puja in 213! Kali Pooja is basically a Hindu festival dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Kali. Being a Hindu festival, date of Kali Puja is always calculated from the Indian traditional lunar calendar. Festival of Kali Puja is always celebrated on the new Moon day of Diwali festival. Festival of Diwali is usually known for worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, but people of East India worship Maa Kali on this day and hence Diwali is also known as Kali Puja in these regions. However, there is a slight difference in Kali Puja and Diwali. Kali puja is observed on the day when new Moon night prevails at the time of midnight, on the other hand Lakshmi Puja is observed when new Moon night prevails at the time of Pradosh. Hence, Kali Puja and Diwali might also fall at different times. Sometimes, Kali Puja is celebrated a day before Diwali just because of the above mentioned slight difference. Believers of Kali Puja also perform Lakshmi Puja on the full Moon day of lunar month Ashwin.
Legend Behind Kali Puja
Goddess Kali got recognition during 5th and 6th century AD with the composition of Devi Mahatmya. As per the legend mentioned in this scripture, Shambhu and Nishambhu were disturbing Lord Indra. Due to which all Gods started fighting with them. After several endless battles, Gods approached Lord Shiva as well as Goddess Parvati for help. They requested them to provide the protection of Maa Durga or Shakti. In order to give them protection, Goddess Durga created Maa Kali who emerged out of the brow of Durga Maa. And, she named her as Kal Bhoi Nashini.
Goddess Kali was further assisted by her two escorts named Jogini and Dakini to deal with Shambhu and Nishambhu. Kali killed all the demons and after that she started destroying everything that came in front of her sight. In order to stop this mass destruction, Lord Shiva laid down under the feet of Kali. Due to which she got embarrassed and her tongue came out in disbelief of her sin of putting foot over Shiva. That is why we commonly see her image putting foot over Lord Shiva with tongue out.
