About Goddess Jagadhatri
Hindu Goddess Jagaddhatri is known as the Protector of the World. She is considered as the supreme Goddess. She is highly worshipped in West Bengal as compared to the other parts of India. Goddess Jagadhatri is worshipped on Gosthashtami. This is another form of Durga Puja as it also starts from Ashtami (eighth day) and ends on Dashami (tenth day). Exact dates of Puja are decided from the lunar calendar used by Hindus.
Hindu Tantra and Puranas describe Goddess Jagadhatris look in this way:
With a skin tone as morning Sun, three eyed, four armed, Chakra in hand, conch in other, bow and arrow in another, wearing red clothes, bright jewelry and Nagajangopaveeta (The symbol of Yoga and Brahmn); riding a lion over dead Karindrasura, the demon elephant. Sri Ramakrishna says, Goddess Jagadhatri stabilizes in the hearts of those who keeps a control over their frantic elephant called mind.
Legend Behind Jagadhatri Puja
The tale from Holy Hindu Scripture depicts the moment when Mahishasura was killed. The Devatas came in pride for this victory. They thought that Goddess Durga could demolish these Asuras just because of the weapons of Gods. In order to make them realize the truth, Almighty appeared in front of them in the form of effulgent Yaksha.
In perplexed state of mind seeing this figure, God Vayu amongst all the Gods approached him. Yaksha asked him for all what he could do. He replied that he could uproot the giant trees, tumble huge mountains and many more. Yaksha then placed some small amount of grass and asked him to move it. God Vayu put his best efforts but all in vain. Also, the God of Fire, Agni could not burn it. One by one, all Gods (Devatas) failed to move even a single blade of grass.
Hence, Yaksha taught them that they are also the creation of the mother of entire Universe, Goddess Jagaddhatri. He enlightened them that in reality their powers are not their own. Therefore, it has been concluded that the devotees of Goddess Jagaddhtari are absolutely egoless. Such people are the true servant of the world and the manifestation of Brahmn.
In Eastern India, a proper fest is organized to celebrate Jagadhatri Puja. It is almost same like Durga Puja. People of West Bengal celebrate this festival with great fervor. The Jagaddhatri fest is named as Jagadhatri Mela, which is also awaited like Durga Puja by the people of Bengal. Devotees never miss the chance of enchanting the supreme Goddess for her mercy.
Jagadhatri Puja is quite significant for many purposes. Worshipping Goddess Jagadhatri fetches the boon of salvation to the devotees. Such a kind Goddess is she that she bestows her devotees with all what they desire without any of their special efforts. All she looks for is the ultimate faith of her devotees and love for her. This was all brief on Jagadhatri Puja. With this, we hope you will make the best out of this beautiful festival. Happy Jagadhatri Puja 2013!
