How The Lunar Eclipse 2021 Occurs?
According to science, the Earth revolves around the Sun and the Moon revolves around the Earth. During this celestial movement, there comes a point when all three of these planets come together in a straight line, where the Moon either entirely or partially covers the Sun while being positioned between the Earth and the Sun. In this state, a Solar Eclipse occurs. On the other hand, when in the same alignment, the Earth completely covers the Moon while being positioned between the Moon and Sun, a Lunar Eclipse occurs. This is how Lunar Eclipse in 2021 is observed.
Mythological Significance of Lunar Eclipse 2021
However, several mythological texts of Hinduism shed light on the occurrence of Lunar and Solar Eclipse with Rahu-Ketu being the major cause. A mythological story behind it is most prevalent, according to which, there used to be a Demon or Asura named Swarabhanu, who tricked the Devtas and Lord Vishnu and consumed some drops of the Nectar of Immortality or Amrit. This Nectar was obtained after the episode of Samudra Manthan or the Churning Of The Ocean.
It was during this time when the Lord Sun and Lord Chandra revealed his true identity in front of Lord Vishnu, which angered him. As a result, Shri Krishna struck Swarbhanu with his Sudarshan Chakra and separated his head from his torso. Since the Asura was successful in consuming nectar by then, his head and torso became immortal forever. Of which, where his head was called Rahu, his torso was called Ketu. Since then, Rahu and Ketu are believed to have developed a sense of enmity with the Sun and Moon, and hence, put an eclipse on them every year or so.
Types of Lunar Eclipse in 2021
Where the occurrence of a Solar Eclipse stretches for up to different time periods, on the contrary, the duration of a Lunar Eclipse remains longer than that, probably up to a few hours. A Lunar Eclipse usually occurs on the day of Purnima and is of three types:
- Total Lunar Eclipse: A Total Lunar Eclipse occurs when all three planets, the Earth, Moon and Sun, come in straight alignment and the Earth entirely covers the surface of the Moon while being in between the Sun and the Moon. This darkens the Moon since the Sun’s rays are not falling on its surface, making it appear either red or pink when viewed from the Earth.
- Partial Lunar Eclipse: A Partial Lunar Eclipse occurs when, in the same alignment, the Earth fails to entirely cover the surface of the Moon. In this case, the Moon is partially covered, and only half of it appears bright when viewed from the Earth. The duration of this eclipse doesn't stretch for a longer time.
- Penumbral Lunar Eclipse: In case of a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse, the Moon, the Earth and the Sun do not appear to be in a straight alignment, and the Moon passes through the Earth’s penumbra while creating a fragmented image. In this case, the Moon is not entirely covered by the Earth and appears to be dim when viewed from the Earth.
