Namkaran Sanskar means to name a newborn baby while following traditional religious rituals. In other words, it is also called naming ceremony or Naamkaran of a baby. It is one of the Hindu Samskara among 16 Sanskar in Vedic Astrology, that are celebrated and performed by the people of different communities.

Name describes the individuality of a person and is his/her identification. In every religion, newborn babies are named following different rituals and traditions. In Hinduism, Namkaran Sanskar is celebrated for naming a baby. Just like Mundan, Annaprasan, Karnavedha and Vidyarambh, Naamkaran ceremony also holds great significance among people. In ancient times, scholarly astrologers or Pandit themselves performed this ceremony following traditional customs and rituals. However, in today’s technical age, parents themselves name their newborn child.

Namkaran Sanskar - Do’s and Don’ts

Naamkaran is the fifth Sanskar in Hindu religion. One should consider Date, Nakshatra and other astrological factors before naming their child.

• Naamkaran of a child should be done on 11th or 12th day after a child is born.
• This ceremony should be performed after 10 days of Sutak period following your child’s birth. Sutak is the time-period of abstention or non-indulgence in any religious or traditional activity.
• Naming ceremony should not be performed on Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi Tithi.
• As far as days are concerned, the ceremony of naming your baby can be done on any day.
• Mrigashira, Ashwini, Rohini, Pushya, Hasta, Rewati, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana and Shatabhisha are considered propitious Nakshatra for this ceremony.
• In some places, naming ceremony is performed on 100th day after a child is born or after 1 year as per family traditions.
• Two names are given to the child during Namkaran Sanskar. First being prevalent and in use, while the second (according to Nakshatra) is kept secret.
• Naming the child according to Nakshatra in which she/he is born, is considered highly auspicious.
• Other than these, parents can name their baby according to their wishes or as per family traditions.

Namkaran Sanskar - When and Where?

• Naamkaran ceremony is generally performed at home. Although, one can perform this auspicious sanskar in a temple or other religious place as well.
• Puja is carried out at home on this occasion. Parents take the newborn child on their lap and then perform Puja ritually.
• For sweet voice of the baby, honey is fed to the child with a silver spoon.
• In the end, parents or mother-father whispers the child’s name in his/her ear.
