History Behind Islamic Calendar

The Muslim or Hijri Calendar 1439 is a lunar calendar that consists of 12 months (354 or 355 days) in a year. The months and dates are determined on the basis of movement of the Moon. The beginning of the new Islamic year starts with first day of Muharram. In similar manner, the beginning of each month is determined by the visibility of a new moon (crescent moon or Hilal) shortly after sunset. Muslims in India and other countries use Hijri Calendar to determine the dates of holidays, rituals and fasts such as annual fasting period of Ramadan and the period of pilgrimage to Mecca. These are also the time for people to appease Allah, purify their souls and absolve all sins.

In this regard, our Islamic Calendar 2018 provide the right and accurate information about dates and holidays that one can correlate to plan their various events.

Festivals and Fasts - Auspicious Events to Appease Allah

There are specific festivals in Islam that are considered highly sacred and are celebrated zealously by Muslims. Ramadan 2018, or the period of Ramzan, is the ninth month in Islamic Calendar. This is the most holy month in which Muslims in India and worldwide perform fasts (Sawm). It is a means for them to gain compassion towards needy and deprived, self-control from worldly desires and to deepen their faith in Allah. This year, the fasting period of Ramadan will start from May 16 as per Gregorian Calendar and will end on June 14. During this 30 days period, Muslims are abstained from eating and drinking during daylight hours and offer charity (Zakat) to the poor and needy. Next day, i.e. on June 15, Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated. On this day, they wear new clothes and offer their gratitude to Allah for giving them good and prosperous lives.

Another event called Eid Al-Adha is also another big festival for Islamic people which is celebrated on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah (August 21), and lasts for 4 days. On this occasion, Muslims sacrifice sheep to Allah and distribute its meat in 3 parts - one third to the needy and poor, another third is given to friends, relatives and neighbours and rest is retained by the family. The festival is celebrated with lots of happiness and merriment and even non-muslim friends and colleagues are invited to join them in their celebrations.

Other than these, festivals like Laylat al-Bara'at, Ashura, Rabi Ul Awwal, etc are celebrated devotedly. Islamic Calendar is followed principally by the Muslims all over the world and the gulf countries like Saudi Arabia.

Thus, the festivals and fasts in Islamic Religion is a means for people to prosper and to fulfill their wishes for a great and happy life. Furthermore, Muslims consult Islamic Calendar for religious and ceremonial purposes like marriage, naming ceremony for babies, etc, though Gregorian calendar is still exploited for purposes like agriculture, trade and commerce.
