Sage Narada came up with a message from Yamlok (kingdom of Lord of death, Yama) that Indrasen's father had not received Moksha due to his past life sins. Thus, Indrasen was advised by Narada to observe a fast on the Ekadashi Tithi of Ashvin month to liberate his father's soul. Since then, this day came to be observed as Indira Ekadashi.

Following are the rituals that are to be followed in Indira Ekadashi:
- Prayers and hymns are chanted to pacify the souls of deceased forefathers on Indira Ekadashi.
- Devotees who observe Indira Ekadashi Vrat, abstain from taking any food on the day of Ekadashi.
- The fast begins from the day of Dashami, when the devotees observing the Vrat are not allowed to consume more than a meal.
- Rituals are performed in the afternoon for dead members of the family.
- Ashwamedha Yagna (horse sacrifice) ritual is performed on Indira Ekadashi.
- The fast is finally terminated on the next day during the Parana period.
