Religious Holidays 2022
Some of the main religious holidays and their significance in India are mentioned below-
Good Friday- This day falls just before Easter and perpetuates the final hours, crucifixion, and death of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is a part of Holy Week that also includes Jesus’ Last Supper and Palm Sunday.
Mahavir Jayanti- This religious holiday in 2022 is observed by the devout Jains to honor the birth and life of Lord Mahavira, along with his teaching. As per the Gregorian calendar, Mahavir Jayanti falls in either late March or early April.
Id-ul-Fitr- This is a prominent Islamic Holiday that marks the end of the holy month of fasting called Ramadan. During this time, Muslims across the world gather together with their families and friends and show gratitude towards Allah.
Buddha Purnima- This religious holiday commemorates Gautam Buddha’s extraordinary life. Also known as Vesak, this day is observed in May on a full moon. The followers of Buddhism spend their time in Buddhist temples on this day, where monks cite verses.
Id-ul Zuha- This day is the most prominent feast according to the Islamic Calendar. Id-ul-Zuha (the Feast of Sacrifice) is based on three major teachings of Prophet Muhammad- offer grace before sunrise, wear the best clothes available to you, and celebrate morality and integrity.
Muharram- As per the Islamic Calendar, Muharram is the first month, which is considered to be sacred. Out of the 30 days of Muharram, the 10th day holds the most significance. The Shia Muslims observe this day to mourn Husayn Ibn Ali’s demise, and the Sunni Muslims celebrate this day to commemorate Moses’ victory over Egyptian Pharaoh.
Dussehra- Dussehra is an eminent religious as well as public holiday in 2022 according to the Hindu calendar. Also known as Vijaydashmi, this day marks Lord Rama’s triumph over Ravana and signifies the victory of good over evil.
Diwali- The exact day of Diwali (Deepavali), the festival of lights, is decided according to the Hindu calendar every year. This day celebrates the returning of Lord Rama with his wife after 14 years of exile. People light candles and diyas on this day and exchange sweets to express their joy.
Guru Nanak's Birthday- Guru Nanak Jayanti is observed all over India by the followers of Sikhism. According to the Hindu Calendar 2022, this day falls on a full moon day of Kartik month.
Christmas- Christians celebrate Christmas Day on 25th December every year. On this day, the people of the Christian community go to the church with their friends and family to attend special church services. In the evening, they celebrate the day by eating festive meals and exchanging gifts.
Maha Shivratri- Shivratri means “The mega night of Lord Shiva”. On this day, the prayers are offered to Lord Shiva to commemorate the time when he saved the world from ignorance. There are 12 Shivratri festivals observed according to the Hindu calendar, out of which Maha Shivratri is the most significant and holy.
Holi- The festival of colors, Holi, is celebrated in India with utmost enthusiasm and joy. This festival commemorates the demise of Holika and also marks the arrival of the spring season.
Ram Navami- This religious holiday in 2022 is observed to celebrate the birthday of the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu, Lord Rama. On this day, people of the Hindu community observe a fast and seek Lord Rama’s blessings.
