The most important ritual of the fast of Karwa Chauth is watching the reflection of the moon and the husband in a vessel filled with water. Once the moon appears, women worship and see the face of their husband through sieve. Only after performing all these rituals women take water and eat food and the first bite is always taken from the hands of husbands.

Women hear any one such story and pray for the long life of her husband. One such story of Karva Chauth is there was a girl who was the only sister of seven brothers. They all loved her a lot. She was married and she observed the fast for the longevity and wellness for her husband. The brothers were so touched and they couldn't see their sister having no food. In the evening, they planned a trick through which they convinced their sister that the moon has appeared whereas, while in real it hadn't. Innocent girl performed all the rituals and as soon as she started eating her food, her husband died.
This news made her extremely sad and she kept on crying. She worshipped hard and her prayers forced Goddess to appear in front of her. The goddess told her that she was tricked and must observe the fast with utter devotion again. The girl kept the fast again and with pure heart and performed all the rituals again. Like this, she saved the life of her husband.
